The Pirate Bay Website Runs a Cryptocurrency Miner

Image
A few hours ago a cryptocurrency miner appeared on The Pirate Bay website, using the computer resources of visitors to mine Monero coins. The operators of The Pirate Bay are testing it as a new way to generate revenue, but many users aren't happy. Four years ago many popular torrent sites added an option to donate via Bitcoin. The Pirate Bay was one of the first to jump on board and still lists its address on the website. While there’s nothing wrong with using Bitcoin as a donation tool, adding a Javascript cryptocurrency miner to a site is of a totally different order. A few hours ago many Pirate Bay users began noticing that their CPU usage increased dramatically when they browsed certain Pirate Bay pages. Upon closer inspection, this spike appears to have been caused by a Bitcoin miner embedded on the site. The code in question is tucked away in the site’s footer and uses a miner provided by Coinhive. This service offers site owners the option to convert the ...

Apple’s iMac Pro arrives December 14, starting at $4,999

Image
It seems like forever ago that Apple first teased the iMac Pro, the souped up, professional grade version of its all-in-one. Announced back at WWDC, the company promised the computer would arrive sometime in December, and in spite a few months of near radio silence on that front, it looks like it’s about to deliver. The dark gray desktop will be available in a matter of days, on December 14, bringing with it some pretty nutty internal specs and a price tag to match. The iMac Pro starts at $4,999 and includes up to an 18-core Xeon processor, 128GB of memory and 4TB of storage. This is pretty a serious piece of machinery in a form factor that was once considered a bit of an at-home computer starter kit. It’s clear the company still has its sights firmly set on creative professionals, and with the regular Mac Pro currently in a state of limbo, this is the company’s foremost machine for doing high performance tasks like editing 4K video and 3D graphics. No surprise then, that t...

How Face ID Works On iPhone X

Image
Apple's new smartphone, iPhone X, uses a recognition system called 'Face ID' to unlock the device and authorize payments. How does it check your identity is authentic? "It compares two face images and determines how similar they are," says Professor Anil Jain, who studies pattern recognition and computer vision at Michigan State University. "In the simplest way, that's what face recognition does. You enroll your face, just like in Touch ID you enroll your fingerprint." Image capture Face ID uses a combination of light projectors and sensors to take several images of your facial features. Collectively called the 'TrueDepth camera system', Apple says these technologies work together to build a 'detailed depth map of your face to recognize you in an instant.' To set up Face ID, you follow the on-screen instructions, which involve moving your head in a circle so a camera can take multiple shots of your face for a ...

iPhone X Launched: Everything you need to know

Image
THE NEW IPHONE X packs more new stuff into any device since the original iPhone. It's the most complete redesign of the product ever and even offers a glimpse at what the iPhone might become when the world no longer wants smartphones. Of course, you probably won't buy one. Even if you can afford the super high price, getting your hands on an iPhone X in the next few months will be like hunting for the holy grail. Except in this case, the fancy one is the right answer. Today, at an event in Cupertino that doubled as a grand opening of its new spaceship of a campus, Apple launched three new iPhones. Yes, three. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus upgrade the existing models without completely changing them. (More on those in a second.) The third model, the iPhone X, is another thing entirely. Meet the X First of all, the X looks like no other phone. It doesn't even look like an iPhone. On the front, it's screen head to foot, save for a small trapezoidal notch...
